Chapter Six

We run back and into the eighth floor. The massive series of offices is hot and smokey. My heart is pounding in my chest, my throat and my eyes are burning, coughs bursting out from my chest and up into my throat. Jonathan takes my hand and leads me away from the stairwell, but I can tell he’s scrambling for a way out.

“The other stairwell,” I say. “Maybe the fire was above us on the other side.”

“What could be happening here? What was that other sound?”

“An explosion — a bomb, do you think?” Jonathan looks at me, but he doesn’t disagree. My stomach turns to think I could have been right all along.

The terrorists finally hit Hollywood.

Jonathan nods and pulls me across the floor, down the halls and toward the other corner of the building. But it’s getting hard to see and to breathe. The furniture fades behind the thickening smoke and I bang my hip against a desk I can’t even see as we race by. It hurts, pain shooting up my body and down my legs, but I ignore it.

It’s the slightest pain I’m likely to feel, and it certainly won’t be the last. I’m still alive and still running, and I’m grateful enough just for that. It’s getting harder to breath and I’m coughing more and more, my throat parched.

We make our way to the other stairwell. He pushes a chair out of our way and pulls me through the smokey floor, finally finding the stairwell in the corner. Jonathan stops and eases me back. He presses his hands against the door.

“It’s hot.”

“It’s hot in here,” I answer.

Jonathan clearly gives it some quick thought, and I know he realizes we don’t have a choice. He eases me back further, then reached for the knob. He pulls back his hand and shakes it, then tries again and forces the stairwell door open.

Hot smoke pours out of the doorway, thick and black, and a wave of heat that makes Jonathan slam the door closed once again. He looks at me, and there’s no reason to explain that our escape routes are both cut off.

I lead Jonathan back to the center of the office suites. We find a central bullpen area in the center of the floor.

“What do we do,” I ask in a quick panic, “Jonathan, what do we do?”

Jonathan looks around. “We’ve gotta jump.”

“Jump? Jonathan, we’ll be killed.”

“If we stay in here, we haven’t got a chance.” Jonathan eases me back and picks up a chair. He raises it high above his head and throws it at the darkened glass, but the chair bounces off and away.

Jonathan reaches for another, shouting, “Two at once, get a chair!” I do, spinning and finding one close by. “One,” Jonathan calls, adding, “two … three!”

We both throw the chairs and I can’t help but recoil as they hit the big glass window and bounce back at us.

It’s getting even hotter, and I know we’ve only got a few minutes left. I scan the room, barely able to see anything in front of me.
